With the passing of the Holy Father, Pope Francis today, we are reminded that no one has a lease on life. Not even the pre-eminent religious leader in the entire world. You can be before thousands of cheering supporters one day and before God the next – just like he was.
Truly, the only mystery in life is in the length of it. We are all just one heartbeat away from immortality and the end of everything as we know it. If we are fortunate, we get about 85 summer vacations, 85 birthday cakes, 85 Easters, and about 1,000 months. So, how many have we had? Are we doing our very best with them?
No one knows when their day will come but we do know that no one escapes alive… But I’m here to tell you that there is very good news in all this darkness! This essential uncertainty provides an extraordinary opportunity for everyone.
Think about it. If any day could be our last, doesn’t that add real urgency to every single day we do have? So, isn’t today the most important day we will ever get?
If we take full advantage of every day to do what we want to do; to say what we want to say; to reach as high as we want to reach; to help all the people we want to help; to protect those we want to protect; to strive for what we want to achieve, and to step forward in faith to be the person we truly want to be, don’t we become the very best we ever dreamt we could be?
Doesn’t the uncertainty of the WHEN add urgency to the NOW?
For me, the lesson from the timing of Pope Francis’s passing is that every day is a gift to create the legacy we want, just like he did. Yes, it’s true, everyone gets one last limo ride – at the back, way at the back. But until then, keep driving forward to being your very best self.
